You want to go into the spicy modeling business, but you have no idea where to start. There are many different routes you can take. Some wish to use the services of a modeling agency. This agency can do many things for you in order to help jump start and advance your modeling career.

The role of an agent is simple - they find you modeling work. Talking with the big clients and companies, they do their best to get you placed in profitable shoots and collect their percentage of the profit. An agent will work with you in order to make you more desirable to companies - things like test shoots, comp cards, and other activities that all serve to show you off to the buyer’s market.

There are a few ways in which you can garner some interest from a modeling agency. Truth be told, very few models are discovered on the street - you need to make yourself known. An open call is a date set by the agency that allows anyone to show up for an interview. A dry call is when you send in material unsolicited to the agency. A walk in is a scheduled appointment with an agency.

When you go looking for an agent, you will want to choose one who works in your area of interest. Check out the previous work they have done and the models they work with. Find one that fits you well and that you get along with. Since an agent takes a vested interest in your work and career, you will be spending a large amount of time with them. Find someone that you click with! Agencies have different policies, procedures, and services - what works for one agency might not work for another. So don’t be surprised if you encounter two completely different processes between multiple agencies.

There is no easy way to find the perfect modeling agency - it takes hard work and research to find great ones to work with. You can ask models who work in the industries that you would like to, or search the yellow pages for local agencies. You will want to target agencies that have a strong presence in the given market. Industry knowledge and insider contacts can help you a great deal with your career. Those connected agencies will also know how best to market you to their contacts, as well as what that area demands.

Be very careful of the agencies that you send material to. Because of the nature of the industry, it is very easy for scam artists to set up shop and look virtually identical to a legitimate modeling agency. The easiest way to tell a scam agency - they ask for money up front. A legitimate agency takes a commission off of work they get you - they assume all costs of running an agency beyond that.

Sometimes you are better off without an agent. Depending on the type of work you want to do and your location, you might find greater success marketing yourself. You will need to work a great deal in order to find out whose hiring models, building up a client base, and making sure you don’t get burned. If there aren’t any good agencies around, choose to be your own agent, but if you have the opportunity find yourself a solid agent to work with. It normally works out better in the long term.
