Well, you did it - you’re going to an audition. Whether the agency is having an open call where any aspiring model can attend or a closed audition, there are some definite do’s and don’t to ensure your chances of modeling survival.

Do’s
1. Show up early
2. Be prepared to work hard - modeling isn’t just laying around and letting people take pretty pictures of you
3. Be used to staying in one position for a long amount of time - posing for college art classes can help get your muscles used to this.
4. Help out as much as you can - don’t complain about how early it is, talk with your makeup designer about what colors you feel best accent your skin.
5. Be pleasant. You are too early in your career to take a prima donna attitude - although you shouldn’t even consider one later in your career. You can find beautiful people around every corner. Beautiful personalities though - those are rare.
6. Pay close attention to what the photographer is telling you - he knows far better than you what poses and props you should be using for your photo shoots.
7. Talk about the overall image the photographer is trying to convey and match your body and facial expressions as closely to that as possible.
8. Have plenty of comp cards to hand out to pretty much everyone there - you never know whose connected to who, and the last thing you want is some hot agent wondering what your name is.
Don’t
1. Show up late - you’ll get the hairstylist, makeup designers, and probably the fashion coordinator rather unhappy.
2. Get an attitude - everyone is just doing their job. Even if you get rejected, you don’t want to take that out on anyone at the shoot. Word travels fast as the modeling industry is based on networking.
3. Forget to tell someone where the shoot at and how long it’s going to be. Even better, bring someone along for the ride. They’ll get to learn about modeling as you do at the modeling audition. And if you get turned down, at least you’ll have a shoulder to cry on.
4. Insist that you know best - if you’re just getting started in the industry you would do well to listen to the more experienced people around you. There’s a rhyme and reason to everything that is done, from your hair to the lighting. Make suggestions but don’t act like you know it all.
5. Forget to bring a variety of clothing. They might ask for a shoot and you won’t have the right clothing for it - how embarrassing would that be. They most likely won’t provide clothing for you at an audition, so make sure you have at least five or six outfits.
